Dallas, TX: To tax or not to tax the Internet? That’s the question the House will vote on this week when they consider extending the Internet tax moratorium.
First, there are Constitutional issues. Current proposals to tax the Internet often infringe upon the protections afforded under the due process, commerce, compact, or confederation clauses of the U.S. Constitution. This cannot be tolerated.
Second, most legal Web tax plans are impractical. Sales, use, and access taxes aren’t needed to raise revenue, and some variations would impose an unacceptable economic burden on the Internet without a compelling non-revenue justification to recommend their adoption.
Moratorium expansion will not undermine local and state actions.
Analysts from the IPI Center for Technology Freedom are available to discuss problems with current Internet tax proposals and advantages to extending the current Internet moratorium.
