Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is pushing legislation she calls a “Green New Deal (GND)” to eliminate the United States’ use of fossil fuels and replace them with select renewable sources of energy.

Merrill Matthews, Ph.D., IPI resident scholar, praised the new proposed rule, noting that it allows small businesses to do what large employers have long been able to: self-insure. “Self-insured employers have been able to avoid many of the state and federal mandates imposed on the small group and individual markets, which helped employers keep down the cost of coverage,” he said.

Merrill Matthews, resident scholar at the Institute for Policy Innovation, said Wednesday that "Republicans will think they dodged the bullet with this. They will feel it could have been worse."

While it might have seemed reasonable in the 1970s to transition to ethanol, advances in drilling and environmental assessments have disclosed numerous problems. Maybe President Trump will, like a number of other policies, reconsider the economics and the science and say to the ethanol industry: You’re fired.

If the president's goal is to increase U.S. manufacturing so that Americans are buying fewer foreign products and foreigners are buying more U.S.-made products, there is a right and wrong way to do it. And imposing import tariffs is the wrong way.

With no new healthcare law in place or in sight, President Trump's efforts to recast healthcare reform are in the hands of Tom Price and Seema Verma.

“But the reason Obama was hit with so many more unanimous decisions was because he went rogue early on, asking his staff to look for novel theories that would allow him to move forward with implementing his agenda,” writes Merrill Matthews for Rare. “And if that meant twisting the Constitution—and basic logic—to get it, so what?”

If Trump focuses on these reforms, rather than punitive tariffs, he'll stand a good chance of rejuvenating American manufacturing.

The Swiss rejected a guaranteed basic income, and the U.S.—and especially conservatives—should do so too.
