While I'm mostly following what's going
on at the WIPO General Assemblies, across the street at the ITU (International
Telecommunications Union), PrepCom-3 of the World Summit on the Information
Society (WSIS) is having their last meeting before the big WSIS summit
in Tunisia later this year.
This is where the debate over Internet governance is taking place.
Big news yesterday: Our "friends" at the EU stabbed the US in the back yesterday on Internet governance.
The issue is whether the US will relinquish control over control of root zone files and TLDs (top level domains) to a UN body for control of the Internet.
Now, on the very surface of it, do you think it's good to give the UN control of the Internet? Just given one year's experience observing a UN organization like WIPO, I can tell you that giving a UN body control of the Internet would be an unmitigated disaster.
The U.S. lost its only ally yesterday when the EU changed its position and supported giving control of the Internet to an international body.
